Aserewadi D/A Primary gets new classroom

The new classroom blockA six-unit classroom block has been inaugurated for the Aserewadi District Assembly (D/A) Primary School in the Wassa Amenfi East District, a farming community in the Western Region.
The construction of the facility was funded by the Japanese Government under the Japan Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP), Meiji Confectionery Company of Japan and the Armajaro Cocoa Traceable Foundation.

The project was undertaken in line with efforts by Armajaro and its partners to reward communities where sustainable cocoa was produced to feed chocolate manufacturing companies.

The Aserewadi D/A Primary, the only school in the agrarian community, which started in 1977 with 80 pupils, currently has a population of 265. However, many children are not in school and the new project is expected to take care of an enrolment drive the school authorities are currently undertaking.

Chiefs and other local community leaders who could not hide their joy over the modern facility commended the financiers and said the project would ginger parents, especially those who do not have their children in school.

The head teacher, Mr Francis Amoako, indicated the commitment of the teachers to work hard to justify the money spent to undertake the project.

The Deputy Director General of Education, Mr Charles Ahaeto Tsegah, said the Ghana Education Service had a relationship with Armajaro and Sourcetrust, a not-for- profit organisation that supported and promoted sustainable farming practices throughout the developing world.

He pointed out that the provision of quality education was not the responsibility of the government alone but other stakeholders.

A representative of the Japan Embassy in Ghana, Mr Shigeru Hamano, said Japan was proud to be a major user of Ghana’s dried cocoa beans, which he described as being of high quality grade.

He expressed the hope that the relationship between the two countries would keep growing.

The Managing Executive Officer (Production Division) at the Confectionery Business Unit of Meiji Company Limited, Mr Kazuo Kishida, said it was not for nothing that the company committed funds to the clasroom block.

He explained that cocoa purchased from Aserawadi had helped boost the company’s chocolate production because of its high quality and it was important that the company rewarded the community with the school.

The District Chief Executive for Wassa Amenfi East, Mr Badu Acheampong, advised teachers to avoid acts such as alcoholism and absenteeism that retarded educational development.
