Anglican Diocese rehabilitates school block

The Anglican Diocese of Cape Coast has officially handed over a refurbished six unit classroom block to the St James Anglican Basic Schools at Agona Swedru.

The renovation work, which cost GH¢14,925.40, included the roofing of two classroom blocks, fixing of new doors, cementing of all the classrooms and the painting of the entire block.

A severe rainstorm that hit Agona Swedru on May 4, 2012, led to the destruction of two classrooms, as well as textbooks, exercise books and other teaching and learning materials.

The situation compelled school authorities to convert the store room and computer laboratory into classrooms to accommodate the affected pupils.

All efforts to get assistance from the Agona West Municipal Assembly proved futile since the assembly was overstretched, compelling the Anglican Church to organise a fundraising ceremony in June, 2013 to raise funds to rehabilitate the entire block since it was an old block that had not seen any renovation.

At the handing over ceremony, the Coadjutor Bishop of the Cape Coast Diocese, Rt Rev. Dr Victor Reginald Atta-Baffoe, said the move was a collaboration between the church and the government towards the delivery of quality education to students.

He noted that although the government had taken over the management of all mission schools, they could not leave the entire burden on the government, adding that it was incumbent upon them to complement the efforts of the government in the provision of education to the citizenry.

The Agona West Deputy Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Ernestina Nkansah, lauded the Anglican Church for playing a pivotal role in the rehabilitation of the school block.

The Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Samuel Oppong, stated that it was the responsibility of the government, parents and teachers to prepare the young generation to take over the mantle of leadership in future.

The Headmistress of Basic School B, Miss Henrietta Fynn, thanked all who contributed in diverse ways towards the renovation of the school block and called for more financial support towards the rehabilitation of the other blocks in the school.
