The project is being executed by the AL-HUDA Islamic Society, a local non-governmental organisation, with financial support from the government of Saudi Arabia.

Expected to be completed in four years, the university will provide a unique opportunity for Ghanaians and students from other West African countries to acquire tertiary education.

Courses to be offered

The 20,000-capacity university, when completed, will run programmes such as Law, the sciences, Business Administration, Communication Studies and Religious Studies.

It will also have an ultra-modern hospital, a sports complex, a golf course and a police station.

Regional minister’s address

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Sarpong said education was a must for every Ghanaian, hence the government’s commitment to improve the educational sector.

He entreated parents to channel all their resources into educating their children to ensure that the children received the best of education.

Project funding

Stressing the importance of education in society, the Imam-Jiddah of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Khalid Abdallah Al-Hamoudi, indicated that it was the means to overcome ignorance, poverty and diseases which were the three major challenges confronting mankind.

He noted that the new university would cater for students who could not gain admission to the other universities in the country.

Community development

The Chief of Gomoa Dasum, Nana Obokomatta IX, said the completion of the university would open up the area for development and provide employment for many people.

He said a scholarship scheme would be instituted for the indigenes to further their education at the university.

Nana Obokomatta thanked AL-HUDA and the Saudi Arabia government for their immense support towards the project.

The ceremony, which was chaired by Daasebre Kwebu Ewusi VII, the President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs, was also attended by Obirifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, the President of the Gomoa Akyempim Traditional Council, and Obrempon Nyanful Krampah XI, the President of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council.
