Dubbed: ‘Adansi reads,’ AngloGold intends to help the pupils have a full understanding of the basics of the Queen’s language, especially those in classes three to six and to reverse the current poor results in the English Paper in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at Obuasi.

Presentation of story books

The mining firm has therefore presented 160 Ghana Education Service (GES) approved story books to help them get the rudiments of the language and its application.

Twelve schools, including Len Clay Memorial, Sanso Methodist Primary and Ayease M/A Primary, benefited from the project valued at GH¢17,320.

AngloGold also pledged to supply more books quarterly until every school under its operational area would be covered.

Aside that, the company, in collaboration with the GES, is to begin a pre-lesson reading classes dubbed ‘AGA Reading Hour’ to build the confidence of the pupils and help them master the language.

The Sustainability Manager of AGA, Nana Ampofo Bekoe, said all beneficiary schools were to form reading clubs which were to be supervised and monitored till the desired results were achieved.

It is to record a significant and strong pass in all subjects in the BECE by 2020; enhance the reading, speaking and writing of English Language by 2020 and to promote the establishment of reading clubs and peer learning among pupils by 2020.

He announced that each of the schools was also to benefit from slightly used computers from the mining company to boost the teaching of ICT.

Supply of computers

In 2012 when the Obuasi Community Trust Fund was established, AGA supplied more than 160 fresh computers to schools in the Obuasi Municipality to facilitate the teaching and learning of ICT.

In spite of the fact that AGA is currently not producing, it undertakes projects in its operational areas, including the provision of basic facilities to enhance their lives.

A fortnight ago, AGA, in collaboration with Project Cure, an America-based non-profit organisation, presented a medical equipment to the AGA Health Foundation (AGAHF) Hospital, and the Obuasi Government Hospital.
