The management of the State School for the Deaf at Adjei Kojo in the Tema Metropolis has appealed to the government to address the infrastructure challenges facing the facility to enhance the training of students.

The Headmistress of the School, Miss Barbara Ennin made the appeal when management and staff of Cargill Ghana Limited, a Free Zone cocoa processing company in Tema, donated food items valued at GH¢20,119.60 to the institution.

Ms Ennin, said work on a two-storey dormitory block for male students which started in 1999 had come to a standstill because of lack of funds, while the students travelled long distances to school every day.

Uncompleted structure

She said the uncompleted structure had now become a den for ‘wee’ smokers and criminals, posing a security threat to both staff and students.

She appealed to companies, organisations, philanthropists and individuals to come to the aid of the school and help complete the boys hostel, stressing that the completion of the project would help the school accommodate the male students for better care.

The donation coincided with this year’s World Food Day which is observed annually on October 16 to promote food safety.

Items donated included 20 bags of rice, 10 gallons of vegetable oil, 10 cartons of milk, 20 cartons of Milo, 50 packets of Indomie noodles, soft drinks, boxes of bottled water, among others. The students were also served food and drinks.

Addressing the children through a sign language interpreter, the Operations Manager of Cargill Ghana Limited, Mr Michiel Jehee, said the company was committed to promoting the welfare of the people in the areas of their operation.

“Our vision is to be a global leader in nourishing people as part of our corporate social responsibility, and being the World Food Day, we decided to come around to nourish the under- privileged in the society,” he said.
