The fund, which is an initiative of the Chief of Adaklu-Waya, Togbe Lablulu, is to support selected students with basic educational needs to help improve on their abysmal performance at the basic education level in the area.

Addressing a gathering during the launch of the fund, a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Coast School of Business, Dr John Gatsi, stated that one way to deal with poverty and improve on the living conditions of children was to give them support in their basic education.

He stated that it was important for traditional leaders to have foresight concerning the education of their citizens.

Relevance of educational funds

Dr Gatsi said leaders of communities should promote the establishment of education funds which would have inter-generational effect and bring about positive socio-economic transformation, adding “we cannot deal with poverty without dealing with our ignorance about things that made us worse”.

He observed that the future of every community depended on how enlightened the people were, stressing that “poor performance at the basic level means very limited number of your people will become lawyers, teachers, engineers and policy makers”.

According to him, there should be an effective collaboration between traditional leaders and the educational directorate to develop mutually beneficial strategies for the way forward.

He said it was unfortunate that in some places, education officers were unwilling to let people know about the abysmal performance of the children in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), pointing out that stakeholders who contributed to the development of the educational sector should be enlightened on the performance of students in the districts.

Commendation

Dr Gatsi commended Togbe Lablulu for being a development-oriented leader and called on other traditional leaders to emulate his example.

Togbe Lablulu stated that the community needed the fund to support brilliant students who struggled to obtain their needs at the basic level of education, including school fees and books.

The chief, who is desirous of seeing his community and the whole of Adaklu becoming one of the best in terms of education, was optimistic that education of the people would eradicate illiteracy and poverty and accelerate the development of the district. He appealed to the citizens and philanthropists to help raise funds to sustain the fund.

The Adaklu District Chief Executive, Mr Sky Ganaku, urged managers of the fund to abide by the principles for it to serve its intended purpose.
