Accra Institute renews partnership with US counterpart

The Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) has renewed its institutional co-operation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of the USA.

The partnership would enable AIT to have access to the teaching and learning materials for all the courses being offered at MIT via the Open Courseware initiative of the university.

At a press briefing in Accra, the President of AIT, Prof. Clement Dzidonu, explained that with the agreement, AIT’s faculty and students would have direct and free access to teaching and learning materials of the over 2,000 courses being run by the MIT.

Purpose of partnership

Prof. Dzidonu said the agreement with the MIT was in line with the AIT’s determination to offer campus-based and open university for students in Ghana and elsewhere a high quality education and professional training. 

He said as part of the co-operation, MIT had already made available to AIT a special configured system containing materials and learning resources on all MIT’s programmes, including syllabuses, reading materials, lecture notes, students handouts, courseware, learning videos; e-books, e-journals, e-lab resources and other teaching and learning materials of all MIT’s undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AIT,   President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences Prof. Francis K.A. Allotey, and the partnership of AIT with such a prestigious institution such as MIT would provide students with a world-class education at an affordable cost.

Courses 

The Head of Network System and Services at the AIT, Mr Michael Obiri, said students at any of the campuses would have direct and free access to MIT’s top-class and quality learning.

In his view, lecture materials on all courses being taught by MIT professors in all fields such as engineering, science, architecture, management and computer science would enable students of the AIT to attain the best of education.

Prof. Rafael Reif, the President of the MIT, said “open sharing of knowledge was the purest manifestation of this mission; MIT’s mission is to advance knowledge and educate students and bring knowledge to bear on the world’s challenges.’’
