Eight students at Offinso have benefited from the Offinsoman Educational Fund, a scholarship scheme established by the Offinso Traditional Council to support needy, brilliant students in the area.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the fund, the Mpehihene, Nana Osei Sarpong, in an interview, indicated that an amount of GH¢130,000.00 had been invested as seed money for the sustainability of the scheme, adding that each student benefited from an amount of GH¢875.00 for the 2015/2016 academic year.

He said the amount was invested to increase funds and increase the number of scholarship beneficiaries, and added that the fund sought to cater for “these eight students and others yet to benefit” at the tertiary level in the near future.

He said 60 chiefs within the Offinso Traditional Council individually contributed to the seed money, together with donations from philanthropists during durbars, particularly, Mmoaninko – a festival celebrated every two years in the history of Offinsoman - were also kept in support of the fund.

A copy of a letter sent to one of the beneficiaries and signed by Nana Sarpong read: “We have to remind you that you may continue to enjoy the scholarship in subsequent academic years but this shall strictly depend upon your satisfactory academic performance in this academic year and also, your good conduct”.

Offinsohene

At a presentation ceremony at the Offinso Palace, the Paramount Chief of Offinso, Nana Wiafe Akenteng III before presenting separate cheques to the student beneficiaries recalled that he as an individual and other chiefs in the paramountcy had been providing scholarship packages for needy students from their personal resources.

That, he said, was not enough and that nananom in the Offinso Traditional Area needed to join hands to provide a bigger scholarship scheme to accommodate more needy students having realised the essence of advancing education for development.

He called on the beneficiaries to study hard to make good use of the opportunity and also grow to become good citizens of Offinso.

He, however, advised families of the beneficiaries not to neglect their support for their children and called on all to join nananom in such “a profitable venture to develop Offinsoman, Asanteman and the nation as a whole”.
