75 Schools participate in UCMAS Competition

About 1,080 students from 75 private basic schools in the country have participated in this year’s Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS) Inter-Schools Competition to enhance their proficiency in comprehension, listening, creativity and photographic memory. The second UCMAS interschool competition, which was held at the Burma Hall at Burma Camp in Accra, was also geared towards bringing students aged four to 14 together to test their speed, confidence and concentration by answering more than 100 arithmetic questions within eight minutes.
The UCMAS programme is an initiative of UCMAS Ghana Limited, an academic support facility, and it is put in the curriculum of registered schools, allowing children to do all arithmetic calculations mentally without relying on calculators and computers.
Some of the participating schools included Vilac International School, God’s Grace International School, Sunflower International School, Accra Grammar School, Effort Montessori School, Alpha Beta School and St John’s Primary and JHS.
Christelle Tettey of Vilac International School emerged the overall best winner of the competition, while a 10-year-old class five pupil from the God’s Grace International school, Judith Osei Tete, emerged the winner in the listening competition.
For her prize, Christelle received a medallion, a trophy and a certificate.

Essence of the programme

In a speech read on his behalf, the acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Charles Yaw Aheto-Tsegah, said “The UCMAS programme provides a well-rounded education to develop children’s concentration, creative thinking, memory power, logical reasoning abilities and to boost children’s confidence to face challenges”.
According to him, past participants in the competition who have won international laurels after emerging winners at the local scene, have brought remarkable honours to the country.
Mr Aheto-Tsegah, whose speech was read on his behalf by the District Education Director of La Dadekotopon, Mrs Evelyn Owusu, therefore, lauded the initiative of the organisation, and called on directors and heads of basic schools, both public and private, to embrace the programme to enable their students to reach their full potentials.

Organisations’ perspective

The Director of UCMAS Ghana Limited, Mr Girish Gurbani, observed that the programme contributed to the development of the brain of the child in the formative years, and expressed optimism that the programme would gradually help eradicate the phobia associated with the study of Mathematics among some children.
