613 Allied health professionals complete training

A ceremony has been held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi to induct 613 technicians into the Allied Health Professional Council of the Ministry of Health.

The ceremony was held on the theme “Delivering Safe and Effective Practice and Healthcare, Role of Allied Professionals.” 

Those inducted were made up of medical laboratory technicians, records assistants and physician assistants who have completed their training from the various tertiary Institutions in the country. They were drawn from 10 tertiary institutions, including the Disease Control College at Kintampo, College of Health and Narh-Bita College at Tema. 

Speaking at the ceremony, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong, said the various health institutions in the country could not succeed without the contribution and partnership with the laboratory technicians and therefore their contribution towards healthcare service was crucial to quality health delivery in the country.

He said the government recognised and appreciated the efforts of the allied health professionals and would be committed to their welfare.

The Provost of the College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. E. Tsiri Agbenyega, stressed the need for other health professionals to be recognised and their efforts appreciated to complement quality healthcare delivery in the country.

He pointed out that medical personnel could not offer efficient diagnoses without the support of medical laboratory assistants and, therefore, urged the government and society to consider allied health professional as major and key partners in the healthcare service.

Prof. F. A. Yaboah of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), who was the guest of honour, urged allied health professionals to upgrade their skills and knowledge to enable them to meet the challenges of the time.  

Justice Amo Yartey of the Kumasi High Court took the medical laboratory technicians through the administrative oath.
