The training is being organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the Asheshi University College and the Dream Oval Foundation.

Participants are being taken through social networking, email and chat, exploring the Internet, computer basics and classroom productivity tools.

The objective of the training is to improve teachers’ knowledge in basic ICT skills and enhance the ability and effectiveness of teachers to perform in the classroom, develop better awareness for teachers of the understanding and appreciation of the role of ICT, specifically the use of the Internet in teaching and learning.

Achievements of iTeach project

Since its inception in 2010, the iTeach programme has trained over 100 teachers from the Greater Accra, Central and Ashanti regions.

Over the period, majority of the teachers who have attended the iTeach programme have enriched their knowledge to enhance their teaching methods and inspire their students and colleagues.

The acting General Secretary of GNAT, Mr M. V. V. K. Demanya, in his opening address, said in pursuit of its aim of promoting high academic and professional competence and trade union education, GNAT started a collaboration with DreamOval in 2010 to provide training in basic ICT for its members.

He added that the emphasis was to train young teachers and those from underserved areas and the first workshop in 2010 attracted 30 participants from the Greater Accra Region.

Collaboration

"We pray that this collaboration continues to generate interest in ICT education for teachers and strengthen the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service's efforts in providing facilities at the various levels of education for effective training in ICT,” he said.

Madam Araba Boctchway, the Director of Admission and Financial Aid of the Asheshi University, said one of the objectives of the university was to train people who would change Africa for the better.

The Northern Regional Chairman of GNAT said the teachers were selected from among about 8,000 teachers in the Northern Region and expressed the hope that those who benefit from the training would train others.

The Chief Director of Dream Oval Limited, Mr Derrydean Dadzie, said the initiative would benefit registered members of GNAT who teach in the upper primary and junior high schools, aged between 25 and 35 years, as well as newly appointed teachers.
