The project, dubbed: “GNAT/CTF Nkanbom,” which is in collaboration with the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF), is also aimed at uplifting standards of schools in rural communities to ensure that public schools retain their status to attract more students.

The National Coordinator in charge of the project at GNAT headquarters, Ms Helena Awurusa, who addressed an in-service training for selected participants from the Volta Region in Ho, called for the participation of all district directors of the Ghana Education Service (GES), urging them to see themselves as partners with GNAT for a successful implementation.

Action plans

Participants attended the workshop to work out action plans having identified challenges to quality education in the communities.

The Deputy General Secretary in charge of gender issues, Ms Gifty Apambil, urged participants to check bad gender practices in the communities so as to bring about gender equality.

She announced a proposal for transferring teachers in rural and deprived areas after serving for two years so as to offer them equal opportunity to further their education.

She said they should apply the skills acquired at the in-service training for the benefit of the communities and work hard to turn around their schools to make them more attractive to pupils and also not see their postings to rural areas as a form of punishment.

The Volta Regional Secretary of GNAT, Mr Lar Kitonname, said the collaboration with CTF had yielded positive results for the Volta Region, and that the choice of the region to start the project was in the right direction.
