The laptops, with syllabus and curriculum softwares, among others, will also be made available to ICT teachers who   teach Mathematics and Science.

The Deputy Minister in charge of Pre-Tertiary, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, who made the presentation in Accra to the Ashanti Regional ICT Coordinator, Mr Gabriel Antwi, explained that the beneficiary teachers had undergone training in ICT and how to use the computer to teach other subjects.

Beneficiaries

He said so far the ministry had been able to train about 82,000 teachers all over the country while 54,000 laptops had been distributed.

Mr Kyeremeh explained that other regional directors had already received theirs for teachers in their regions, and that “today’s presentation is the turn of the Ashanti Region.”

Purpose of presentation

He was hopeful that the teachers who would be taking delivery of the laptops would serve as trainer of trainers where they would help other teachers to also be computer literate in order to improve teaching and learning in basic schools.

Mr Kyeremeh urged teachers who would be taking custody of the laptops to handle them with care so as to prolong their lifespan.

He said the laptops were not for the ICT teachers but for the schools, adding,  “they should, therefore not carry the laptops away when they are transferred from their current schools.”

Mr Kyeremeh explained that it was an attempt by the government to improve on teaching and learning in basic schools.

Gratitude

Mr Antwi, who received the items on behalf of the region, thanked the ministry for the presentation and was confident that the computers would enhance teaching and learning at the basic schools.

He said ICT had come to stay and it was refreshing that the ministry was keen on promoting ICT education in the country.
