492 Girls to benefit from scholarship scheme
The United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), with support from the Pusiga District Assembly, is funding a programme to support the education of girls to the junior high school (JHS) level.

Known as the Girls Pass Scholarship Programme, 492 girls in the Pusiga District in the Upper East Region are to benefit from a scholarship scheme this year.
Briefing the Daily Graphic on the package at Pusiga, the District Chief Executive, Mr Alhassan Abugbila, noted that the initiative would enable the beneficiaries to attend, remain and complete JHS education.
He said each of the beneficiaries would receive two sets of school uniforms, a pair of sandals, a mathematical set, three supplementary readers, a ruler, six note books, four pens and four pencils, as well as 12 packs of sanitary pads.
"Once a girl is chosen, she will receive a scholarship package for up to three years until she completes the JHS," he stressed.
According to the DCE, the inauguration of the District Education Oversight Committee will, among other things help address challenges facing girls' education in the district.
Mr Abugbila explained that the district faced challenges such as low enrolment and retention of schoolchildren, particularly girls, poor infrastructure, unprofessional conduct among some teachers and general indiscipline.
Other challenges facing the education of girls in the district, he observed, included dehumanising cultural practices like female genital mutilation (FGM), teenage pregnancy and the migration of girls to the south for menial jobs such as kayayei.
He stressed that his district was determined to address challenges affecting the development of girls and women in general.
