The workshop was to expose the participants to the technology of solar lamps in order to find ways of encouraging the introduction of affordable solar lamps in schools for the benefit of students.

It was sponsored by three German organisations, Bingo, an environmental foundation, School Forests for West Africa, and Villageboom Solar Light Company and Youth and Environment Club based in Ghana.

Closing ceremony

Addressing the closing ceremony, Dr Sam Kwesi Essiamah, the President of the Association of School Forest for West Africa, the initiator of the event, said the project was to support students to have decent light to study at night to improve their academic performance.

He noted that the current energy crisis in the country was an impediment to academic work and that the solar lamps were to be introduced to enable students to learn in the evening.

5000 Solar lamps

He said as part of the project, about 5000 solar lamps would be supplied to students who would purchase them at a subsidised price, indicating that the move was intended to tackle the poor performance of pupils, particularly at the basic level in the country.

According to him, the country cannot continue to face energy challenges since solar energy was the best option for the nation, stressing that the government can adopt solar energy as a viable option to save the nation from future power challenges.

He commended the teachers for participating in the workshop to broaden their scope of knowledge in solar energy.

Director of education

The Agona West Municipal Director of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Stephen Amoah, commended Dr Essiamah for his immense contributions towards improving the standard of education in the municipality, pointing out that with the current energy crisis, the solar lamps would empower the students to study hard.

He commended the participants for resolving to participate in the workshop with a call on them to put the knowledge at the disposal of their students.

The Guantoahen of Agona Nyakrom, Nana Odom Panin VII, who chaired the function, admonished the teachers to ensure that the knowledge acquired benefitted their students.
