The schools are the SDA Basic, Boundary Road, Bishop Mix, Mamprobi Sempe, Mamprobi Salvation Army, All Saints Angelican, Accra Sempe One, Bishops Girls, Kwashieman and Mamprobi Sempe basic schools.

The programme, on the theme: “My Road Safety, My Life,” seeks to intensify road safety education among students in various schools in the country.

Launching the programme, the Managing Director of      Vivo Energy Ghana, Mr Fred Osoro, observed that children aged four to nine were mostly exposed to fatal road accidents when they used the road to and from school, especially when crossing the road.

NRSC Report

Reports from the NRSC indicated that every year, more than 2,000 people are killed through road accidents and over 12,000 people sustained various degrees of injuries.

Mr Osoro said there was the need to implement a programme under which the NRSC would educate the children to adopt road safety measures to safeguard their lives.

He said the company would fund the manufacturing of lollipop stands to be mounted at points of crossing to schools, and also provide logistics and stationery to assist the programme.

GES Response

The Director of School Health Education Programme (SHEP), Madam Kate Opoku, gave the assurance that GES would help advance the road safety education in schools, and urged the beneficiaries to serve as agents of change and disseminate the message to other students and the public.

The Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, said the ministry was prepared to support efforts from the NRSC and stakeholders who would undertake an initiative to help reduce road accidents in the country.

She, therefore, commended the company and urged parents, teachers and the public to educate the children on the road safety tips to reduce fatalities and injuries on the road.
