2017 Edition of Leadership Award for Girls launched

The 2017 edition of the Leadership Award for Girls has been launched at the Adventist Girls Senior High School (SHS) at Ntonsu near Kumasi.

It was launched during the annual summer camp held for girls in SHSs by the Forum of Heads of Girls Senior High Schools (FOHGSHS).

The aim of the four-day camp, attended by over 400 students from all girls schools across the country with their headmistresses and teachers, was to empower the girls, especially in the area of leadership.

During the launch, Ahantaman Girls Senior High School, winners of the 2015 edition, made a presentation on how they utilised the GH¢3,000 award money given them for the renovation of their school’s washroom.

In a power-point presentation, they showed pictures of the project which was inaugurated a month prior to the event.

Processes

They outlined the processes they went through to undertake the project, namely purchasing, negotiating, selecting items and tiling, and also mentioned that through the project they had acquired skills such as public speaking, teamwork, improved leadership skills and boosted self-confidence.

After their presentation, each of the four members of the team received a cheque for GH¢500 from the Osei-Kusi Foundation as their share of the award money. They also received certificates for their participation in the award scheme.

The Leadership Award Scheme for Girls (LAG) is an award scheme initiated by the Osei-Kusi Foundation (OKF) and implemented in partnership with the Forum of Heads of Girls Senior High Schools (FOHGSHS) in Ghana.

It is aimed at empowering young girls with essential leadership skills such as problem solving skills, innovation and self-confidence and to encourage them to participate in decision making at all levels, in schools, communities and the nation at large.

Participating in LAG

To take part in LAG, a school needs to form a team of three to five students, identify a social need in their school or its environs, obtain an application form and type the answers on a separate sheet.

After it has been submitted to OKF, about three to six shortlisted teams/schools will be selected to present their proposals at the grand finale during the FOHGSHS Summer Camp 2017. All teams will be given five minutes to present their project.

The prize for the winning team is GH¢5,000 (GH¢3,000 to implement the project and GH¢2,000 for members of the winning team).

Dr Kofi Osei-Kusi used the opportunity to speak to the girls on how they could become transformational leaders and advised them to commit themselves to the attainment of their goals.
