One hundred and seventy-five of the affected teachers are from the Brong Ahafo Region, while the remaining 11 are from the Volta Region.

The Head of the Public Relations Directorate of the GES, Rev. Jonathan Betty, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, said the GES had been in collaboration with the BNI and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) to conduct a nationwide verification and validation exercise of its staff.

He said the CAGD had blocked the salaries of the affected teachers while investigations were ongoing.

Purpose of the exercise

Rev. Betty explained that the exercise was aimed at eliminating irregularities and excesses in the management of the public payroll system.

He said it was during the exercise that “we detected that the 186 teachers had been operating and drawing salaries as teachers with fake certificates”.

Commitment to sanitise the service

He said the GES was committed to ensuring that the service was dealing with genuine staff.

Rev. Betty said the exercise was ongoing in the other regions and that the list would be made available, adding that teachers with fake certificates would be fished out.

Explaining the issue of impersonation, he said during the exercise, it came to light that some of the teachers were operating with other people’s certificates.
