‘Foster closer relationship with your children’

The Founder of Nneka Youth Empowerment Foundation, a youth-centred organisation, Ms Cecilia Fiaka, has advised parents to establish good relationship with their children in order for them to confide in their parents challenges that face them.

She said because some parents did not open up to their children, the children sometimes found it difficult to approach them with their problems, thus resorting to their friends for advice, which exposed the children to social vices.

Ms Fiaka was speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic during this year’s Nneka Youth Empowerment (NYE) summit held at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region.

GCGL supports programme
Nneka Youth Empowerment Summit is a programme organised annually with the aim of empowering young people, especially girls in deprived areas, on how to identify their potentials and work towards achieving them.

The programme, organised with the support of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), brought together students from more than 20 schools, including both private and public schools in the Afienya area.

Experts and professionals from diverse fields, including motivational speakers, addressed the participants on how to choose the right paths in their lives.

Rights of children
Touching on the rights of children, Ms Fiaka said children had rights just like adults, which must be observed by all, including parents and guardians.

She expressed the worry that many parents violated the rights of their children.

She said because some parents could not meet the needs of their children, they resorted to abusing their children when they (children) approached them with their needs.

Concerning the NYE programme, Madam Fiaka said the purpose of the programme was to provide a platform that would transform the life of children from both rich and poor homes.

Advice
She, however, advised the children to be responsible to their parents and stick to their books so they could become responsible adults in future.

For her part, Mrs Joyce Esther Dadze, a motivational speaker, banker and pastor, urged the children to have focus in life.

She implored the children to adopt good attitudes towards their goals in life, saying nobody had achieved his or her goal without developing good attitudes towards such goals.

“I want to encourage you to adopt good attitude,” she said, advising the children not to be discouraged by the situations in life.
