A number of companies have offered to support the charity home and Korkor’s relationship with her rich boyfriend, Frank, seems to be going nowhere.

“What?” Korkor couldn’t believe her ears, “Are you breaking up with me?” she asked amidst tears, bewildered.

“I can’t marry a woman who doesn’t respect me…” “You mean someone who won’t object to your demands…?” Korkor retorted.

“Hey! Don’t talk to me like that,” he yelled at her and Korkor flinched. Suddenly, she wanted to apologise and tell him they didn’t have to fight.

A part of her just wanted to give in and let him have his way. But at the same time, she couldn’t bring herself to uttering the words.

She couldn’t see herself letting go of her dreams but that was exactly what Frank was asking her to do and her heart was telling her not to give in.

“Fine.., it’s over then,” she surprised herself when she uttered the words. She couldn’t believe she was letting go of Frank, the man who seemed capable of making all her dreams come true; but right now, he was only being a blockade.

And as she looked at him, she felt her whole life flashing before her eyes; from when she was a child, how she strived on her own at school to make good grades, come first in her classes; in high school, in the university and also in law school.

Now she was a lawyer, earning good salary, excelling at work and recently, she had gained a promotion. She had done all of these on her own, the thought struck her and swiftly she wondered what on earth made her think she needed Frank to go further in life?

She didn’t need him and all his money, she concluded, “It’s over…” she spat the words right at him and she meant them.

She went into the bedroom, dressed up, picked her handbag and came back, “I’ll not marry a man who doesn’t respect my choices and beats me,” she said, and pulled the promise ring off her finger and tried to give it back to Frank.

But Frank wouldn’t collect it. He said he didn’t need it and Korkor threw it at him anyway, “I’ll pack out of the house and let you have the keys and papers,” she added.

“You can keep those too. I don’t need them. I’ll let you have them, I can buy myself a car and a house,” she told him and with nothing else to say, she stormed out of the room, got into her car and sped off.

It was over, four years of her life were gone with the wind because of bad choices, but she hadn’t felt quite liberated in a while, she thought.

And as she drove home at 10:30pm, Aeron Amoah was on her mind. He was the man for her, she was sure. He didn’t have all the money in the world, but she certainly didn’t need all the possessions of the world to be happy anyway, she reasoned.

Her greed for material things had led her down that road and she had paid dearly for it. But she would pick up the pieces.

She loved Aeron and he loved her. That was all they needed to build a successful life and she hoped to see him the next day. But more than anything else, she prayed she still had a place in his arms…

The next day, Korkor took the day off from work and instead went to see Aaron Amoah, the man who loved her more than she understood why.

When she made it to Ice & Tea Coffees, and entered the premises, the time was about 9:30am and all the workers seemed busier than usual.

There were no customers in the building but a lot of baking and packing of pastries was ongoing.

She stood at the door unnoticed for a while until one of the workers who seemed to have recognised her locked eyes with her.

She asked her to come in and when she got closer, greeted and asked of Aeron, the young lady said he was in the main kitchen, supervising the staff, “Can you tell him I am here to see him? It won’t take long,” Korkor said, and the young lady agreed.

Before she left through the back door, she offered Korkor a seat and as Korkor waited, she watched the young men and women at work. It appeared they had baked bags and bags of flour.

Hundreds of bagged pastries were taking space and she was convinced they were more than they averagely baked, considering there were no customers around too.

She wondered what was going on. Suddenly, Aeron came through the door with the young lady and when she locked eyes with him from where she was sitting, unconsciously, she held her breath.

Aeron wore a peaceful look and the gentle warmth of his face reminded her to breathe. She stood up and stood very still as he approached and when he got closer, he parted his arms to her and she stumbled right into them. He hugged her warmly, as if they were the only people in the hall.

He didn’t know why she had come, but he was glad to know she remembered him. When they finally let go of each other, Korkor suggested they talked outside and Aeron agreed.

She was nervous, Aeron saw, and he hoped everything was okay. She held on to his hand and didn’t let go off them as  they made it to the parking lot, near her car, “I’m sorry I stopped responding to your calls,” she said after they had shared pleasantries,

“I’ve since then been putting a lot of things into perspective…,” she paused and then continued, “I had a fight with Frank yesterday” her voice was soft as she spoke and most of the time, her head was bowed although Aeron wished she was looking at him.

But he didn’t want her to do anything she wasn’t comfortable with, and so he didn’t push it. He just listened, “It wasn’t the first time we fought…” Korkor hesitated and then said “and sometimes he hit me…”

“What!” Aeron exclaimed and right before her eyes he turned into something like a raging lion, “he hits you?” he roared the question as he began to pace the grounds they were standing, “we need to report him!” Aeron said as his eyes found hers.

“I left him,” Korkor said instantly and stopped Aeron in his tracks. More than reporting Frank who would get away with his deeds, the fact that she was no longer with him was more important to her and she sincerely wanted to let Aeron know that he was the man she wanted to be with.

“I have made a lot of foolish mistakes in my life…” she started to say when she knew she had Aeron’s attention. “I thought I was running away from my past, instead I run into the worst ditch of my life. But I’m out of it now and I know better. If you still don’t have anybody special in your life right now, I came to let you know that I love you…, and I wish to be that special woman in your life, if you’ll still have me,” tears rolled down her cheeks as she spoke.
