Dear men, here’s what you need to eat to attract women

Never has 'eat your greens' sounded more appealing – it seems that men who eat a diet heavy in fruit and vegetables and more likely to be attractive to women. Researchers from Macquarie University in Australia carried out a small study in which they tested the diets of 43 men.

Scientists used a skin test (bright red, yellow, and orange foods tinge our skin very slightly when consumed regularly) to measure the diets of participants. After, they asked the men to exercise while wearing a clean, unscented cotton t-shirt. After, nine women gave them a big sniff.

The research was conclusive – women preferred men with diets high in fruit and veg over those who ate a lot of refined carbohydrates.

"We've known for a while that odor is an important component of attractiveness, especially for women," said Ian Stephen, professor of evolution, genetics, and psychology at Macquarie University in Australia. "Women basically found that men who ate more vegetables smelled nicer".

The study is creative and small. But Prof. Stephen isn't the first author to write about the connection between diet, odour, and attractiveness.

Several other studies, including a number of experiments from Charles University anthropologist Jitka Fialová, also suggest that food has an impact on how appealing straight women find men. It's probably because scent can be a powerful indicator of our health. And women want a strong, fit man. It's instinctive. And, as we know, eating lots of fruit and veg is good for us.

"When you look at overall dietary patterns it's a more whole-foods, plant-based diet that tends to be healthier in terms of less disease risk," New York-based nutritionist and dietitian Cara Anselmo told Business Insider. So there you have it – lads, go eat some cabbage.
