Christmas musings

There seem to be some excitement in the air with Christmas carol trooping in from one FM station after the other. The Christmas songs for me are a great relief from the bombardment with political songs for the past months.

Folks! It is Christmas time. It is a time to celebrate and enjoy with friends and family. It is certainly a time to decorate the house, the rooms with every desirable decor. Lights, colours, ornaments, wreaths, Christmas trees and the shinning glittering garlands are all part of the festive decor.

Families have to come to a consensus on what they want to do this season. You’ll find a variety of decorative items in the market, from the fancy lights to musical decors and much more. But the best décor is the one that you create, after all the spirit of Christmas is all about being together, caring and sharing.

So get together the entire family and get the cutters, papers, glitters and glue and have your best Christmas ever.

People are quite particular about how they celebrate Christmas. So many different ideas are put into action during the festive periods. Some do well to celebrate with minimum budget while others overspend.

Christmas is not about extravagance but about modesty. The background story of Christmas alone should spell out why we should probably improvise to decorate during the season. A manger was converted to a baby’s cot. You don't need to have a lot of extra cash to decorate your home with warmth and personality for the holidays.

You can do it on even the tightest budget and save your cash for the things that really count.

All you need is a little bit of creativity and a few of these great hints to create a festive feeling.

Things to consider when doing the Christmas decor

First things first - Set a plan or a theme for your Christmas decorating. It doesn't cost a thing to have a good plan.

When you are working on a tight budget, choosing a theme is what will help pull your ideas together, as well as make your decorations. Look personal.

Some theme ideas for Christmas are:

  • A toy-collection Christmas – This is a classic theme good for families with a number of kids around.
  • Christmas from different cultures around the world – Nothing stops you from celebrating Christmas the Chinese way. I don’t know how though but it sounds interesting, the family can wear some improvised kimonos. There used to be a pub in Mamprobi called “Christmas-in-Egypt”, is it still operating?
  • Village-style Christmas – For those of us who don’t have village backgrounds we may not be able to really portray this theme effectively, but village style Christmas is really grand.

Fireside gathering in the open, stories from the older folks to the very young one and youth try to engage in wooing conversations. City dwellers are only that close when there is dumsor or power outage during the season.

Besides, it can be a brilliant idea to save power, put off the lights and light up lanterns, candles and have a night of storytelling from uncles and aunties.

  • Santa Claus Christmas – Featuring Father Christmas effigy and some gifts for the kids.
  • Musical/Carol Christmas – A night of chicken meal, some soft drinks, crackers, and singing some Christmas songs.

Next thing is to implement the idea that seems lovable. Christmas is portrayed very well by a beautifully decorated home. Brilliant fragrant greens, twinkling lights, occasion centre pieces all set the stage for a merry holiday season.

But does it have to empty your wallet and bank accounts? Only if you want to get everything from department stores and florists, be prepared to lay down a basket full of Cedis to create that holiday home.

Each year sees a set of new colours, new images, new toys and new trends, all designed to part you from your holiday Cedis. So implement your ideas with strict budget monitoring.

Merry Christmas to everyone, may you enjoy the best of the season. Stay Blessed.
