Suicide: Wife follows husband in two days

A mother of four on Sunday killed herself, two days after her husband also committed suicide.
The body of Ms Alice Nduta, 44, was found by relatives at Kirigo village in Dagoretti, Nairobi, on Sunday morning.

Relatives said the couple had quarrelled over money and other marital issues though it was not clear whether it is the same issues that led to her suicide.

Dozens of residents milled around the house of the couple to view the body which hang from the roof.

Arrange for burial

Most of the relatives were in the compound to arrange for the burial of Mr Evanson Ng’ang’a, who committed suicide on Friday.

Ms Nduta’s elder sister Salome Mukami said her sister woke up at around 5am, went to the bathroom and returned to bed.

Later, she went to look for her and found her body hanging.

Her screams attracted neighbours and police from the nearby Mutu-ini chief’s camp.

Ms Mukami said her sister only complained about their fights once and solved the issues. But according to Ms Nduta’s cousin, Mr Joseph Muthondu, she complained that her husband made her quit her job but refused to adequately support the family despite promising to do so.

Mr Ng’ang’a’s drinking habit also led to tension in the marriage.

“The couple fought on Thursday last week as she (Ms Nduta) tried to rescue two children among them her six-year-old daughter from her husband who had threatened to kill himself and the children,” he said.

The couple, who left behind a six-year-old daughter, lived in the three bed-room house together with the woman’s three other children from a previous marriage.
