NGO to scale up women with vocational skills

The office of the Vice President of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Young Entrepreneurs Federation has partnered with the West African Fashion Council to kick-start a programme geared towards empowering women in vocational skills.

The initiative; “Growing With”, which is scheduled to take place on September 15 at the Ecobank Headquarters in Accra, will equip women with skills and expertise in fashion, producing beads, bangles, bags, footwears and other artefacts, beauty products, among others.

Development

The Vice president of AfCFTA Youth Entrepreneurs Federation, Spark Julius Zuta, speaking to the Daily Graphic, noted that the contribution of the handicraft industry to the development of any country could not be underestimated.

“This provides room for employing more people in the country, and also adds revenue to the government account due to the fact that these small-scale businesses (SMEs) pay taxes to the government.”

“It will also help eradicate hardship and poverty among these women,” he said.

Management Training

Mr Zuta added that the participants would also be equipped with basic business principles and management training so as to enable them to set up and run their own businesses.

“The programme will support the women with funding and other equipment that will make their journey easy,” he said.

Mr Zuta said the participants would not be left alone, because there would be agencies available to guide and mentor them on the path of entrepreneurship.

“Knowing how difficult it is to survive as an entrepreneur, especially without the right guidance, this initiative has made available agencies that have vested interest in women empowerment to provide the needed motivation and principles on entrepreneurship,” he said.
