Dr Kofi Adadey until his demise had retired from Public Service and was on his own as a Private Public Health Consultant. He was born 75 years ago. After his Primary and Middle School education, he entered Prempeh College, Kumasi in 1955 where he obtained the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level certificates.

He was very active in sports for his House, Aggrey House, where he ended up as the House prefect.

Professional Training & Engagements

From 1963 to 1971, he entered the University of Ghana Medical School as one of the second batch of medical students of the ‘Siamese class’ who successfully completed a course of study in medicine and were awarded the MB ChB Degree. After his housemanship training at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, he served as a medical officer in the hospital for a year before he was posted to the Cape Coast Hospital in the Central Region.

From 1975 to 1977, he obtained a Diploma in Tropical Public Health, (DTPH) and a M Sc in Occupational Medicine in 1977 at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He obtained a Diploma in Industrial Health, (DIH) the same year.

He was elected an Associate of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (AFOM) of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1985, a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in 1987, a Fellow of the Ghana Medical Association, 2003 and a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, 2003.

After spending some time in the UK, he went to work in Nigeria as a Senior Medical Officer at University College Hospital, Ibadan from 1978 to 1980 and as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) from 1980 to 1985.

While in Nigeria he was the unofficial ‘Ghanaian Representative’ there who offered assistance to several of the Ghanaian doctors who went to write the FWAC certificate examinations.

On his return to Ghana in 1985, he was appointed as the Western Regional Director of Health Services where he endeared himself as a selfless leader to the admiration of the people of the region until 1991. No wonder he served on a number of Regional Committees. From 1991, he was posted to serve as the Regional Health Director for the Greater Accra Region until his retirement from the Public Service in 2004. He was a part-time Lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School between 1993 and 2003.

An active retirement

He became more active after his retirement. He was appointed the Executive Director of the Airport Clinic until 2010. He took active interest in the activities of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and the Forum of Senior Medical and Dental Practitioners (FSMDP), which is an Association of Retired Medical and Dental Practitioners and served on the Governing Council of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons between 2009 and 2011. In 2006, he was elected to serve on the Medical and Dental Council and ended as the chairman of this august body until 2011.

As an ‘Amanfoo’, he never missed any activity or social gathering involving his peer ‘Amanfoo’! Dr Adadey served as chairman of the Akuafo Hall Alumni Association. Under his leadership, a number of Outreach Health activities were undertaken. He was well respected for his ‘coolness’ and sense of humour at meetings. He served on the Board of Frontline Capital Advisors and was also a Trustee of the Ghana Medical Company Pension Fund.

He loved his traditional values and always spoke impeccable Akuapem Twi and was very much involved in the traditional council affairs. It was no wonder that he was Chairman of the Committee of the Akuapem Gyaaseman Educational Fund.

It was with sadness that we learnt of Kofi’s sudden death on that Sunday morning because he never outwardly showed any signs of illness.

You have served your family, school, university, community and country. We wish you a Peaceful Eternal Rest.

This tribute is written on behalf of the Forum for Senior Medical and Dental Practitioners Ghana Medical Association
