The sun at midnight

The title, “The Sun At Midnight,” is intriguing. The sun at day is obvious but the sun at midnight is certainly a spectacle. It chases darkness away and gives delight to the eyes. In choosing this title, the intent of the author is clear, i.e. to offer some light in the dark on our journey of faith.

It is a book of 124 pages, concise and portable enough to enter  a handbag, pocket or be carried on  anywhere. The outer cover is soothing to the eyes. It has the imagery of a ray of light shining in a green forest. The light illuminates what would otherwise have been a thick dark jungle.

The style of writing is purposefully simple to make reading easy and to accommodate all manner of persons. In a space of seven chapters, the author uses the life-stories of seven biblical personages as pegs to give direction to his flow of thoughts. The experiences of these biblical figures are harnessed into a springboard to project snippets of wisdom that qualify as maxims. At the end of each chapter, he proffers series of questions to be pondered upon and to deepen the process of reflection.

Some of the insightful quotes drawn from the book are: “When God is silent, remember it is only because he is preparing to speak louder and clearer,” “Often it is when we are at our end that we experience greater beginnings,” “It is only when trouble finds you that you realise you have talents that are lying fallow”, “Greatness comes from smallness but while we are small, we must think greatly and prepare in smaller ways towards greatness,” “Even in the challenges of your life, prepare yourself for the changes ahead” etc.

The author, Rev. Fr Derrick Eyram Senanu, is a Roman Catholic priest of the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Study of Religions from the University of Ghana, Legon and a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree from the Pontifical Urban University, Rome. He also pursued some studies in education (PGDE) at the University of Cape Coast. He is a product of St Peter’s Regional Seminary, Pedu-Cape Coast, St Paul Major Seminary, Sowutuom, St Teresa Minor Seminary, Elmina and Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary, Koforidua.

“The Sun At Midnight” is no doubt an inspirational book that offers to give hope to anyone who is on the verge of giving up in life. In a world characterised by a lot of bad news, the book brings good news. It is worth reading and prudent to have a copy by oneself.

The book was launched at Holy Spirit Cathedral Parish Hall on   February 12, 2017.
