Improve crime scene investigations

Criminal investigations play a vital role in unravelling the circumstances surrounding cases in order to solve them. In Ghana, unfortunately crime scene cannot be depended upon to gather evidence on cases for prosecution.

One would expect that with the development of new technology, techniques and procedures, law enforcement would become increasingly dependent on science in the prevention, detection and prosecution of crime.

Sadly, it seems that is not the case in Ghana. In almost all cases, prosecution depends entirely on witnesses and scientific evidence (even where it exists, it is not linked properly to the crime).

It is quite disturbing when cases are called in court and some investigators appear uncertain about the methodology used in carrying out their investigations to enable prosecutors to confidently handle the case.

Compared to what pertains here, it is refreshing to see the extent to which western investigators would go to gather every bit of evidence whenever a crime is committed.

It is equally amazing how a simple strand of hair can produce enough DNA which is used by investigators to trace and eventually capture a criminal.

It will help if the police service strengthens their investigation teams with individuals with the requisite background who can be trained in modern forensics investigations so as to modernise their approach towards solving crimes.

They must also educate the public on what can be done or not done at crime scenes.

First aid training could also come in handy at accident scenes while due care is taken not to alter relevant evidence.

In the year 2011, a £3million ultramodern multi-purpose Police Forensic Science Laboratory was said to have been opened in Accra.

This facility should be put to maximum use so that crime suspects wouldn’t have to spend long periods in police custody or in cells.

Sometimes, suspects charged with petty crimes spend close to five months in prison for investigations to be completed. Such a situation does not ensure prompt justice.

The police and all responsible agencies must put their resources together to identify and implement the needed strategies and programmes which can improve criminal investigations in Ghana and ultimately lead to a faster criminal justice delivery system.
