Ghana - A shining example of democratic governance

Ghana sailing through elections since 1992 up to date and producing her governments without any subversion is an achievement which ushers her to become a hub of democratic activities especially to the Sub-Saharan African regions.

It is welcome news that Ghana’s shining status in democratic governance has over the years won the attention of African leaders and nationals who have paid visits. That is the beauty of democracy!

Countries have praised Ghana for sailing through crucial elections where a government had handed over political power to another government  three consecutive times (in 2001, 2009, and 2017) without any political upheaval. This feat of democratic governance Ghana prides herself on is an achievement other Sub-Saharan African regions are still struggling to achieve.

To lend credence to the fact that Ghana is becoming a centre of attraction and admiration in democratic governance, a delegation from Swaziland, came to Ghana some time ago, on a mission to find ways and means to inject the spirit of democracy which according to the delegation was missing in the governance of that country.

The floodgate of delegations from other countries is now open with Ghana becoming a host nation to foreign delegations. This is good for the country because it is a sign that those countries believe in the security of Ghana. It is no doubt that when the security of a country is assured it woos investors.

When countries begin to flock to a particular country on missions then it means that particular country has something attracting those countries. In Ghana’s case, the oil find and the democratic governance could be used as the yardstick to measure the floodgate of delegates from other countries.

One would admit that the oil find and the entrenchment of democracy in Ghana would go a long way to attract investors. More so, when countries begin to believe in the security of a particular country, that alone is a sign that conspicuous development would begin to flourish in that particular country.

We must not lose sight of the fact that a country that is not governed on democracy but rather on dictatorship is unstable and would not attract any investors.

Job creation

A government does not create jobs for the unemployed. What government does is to create an enabling environment to woo investors to come and create jobs. This means when democracy is missing in the governance of a country investors are denied security and stability they needed for the protection of their investments.

For decades America has flourished in democratic governance and that had won herself a prosperous and a developed country where peoples from all over the world nurse the interest to visit. This is a country that has shown the way in an exemplary fashion in democratic governance to the whole world.

In the case of the African continent especially, some of her countries emulate the American example of democratic governance in a toddling manner and have succeeded in jumping some hurdles of dictatorship to become weaning democratic states. Other countries are yet to jump their step to also become democratic nations.

The winds of democracy swirling across the world in this dispensation have not yet blown in some countries  therefore, making those countries remain autocratic. That system of governance denies meaningful development.

Since democracy is a process and not an event it is hoped that very soon every country in the world would embrace it. This is the only way significant development could be achieved especially, in the developing countries.

The praises being showered on Ghana from all angles on her feat in using the power of the thumb to change governments resulted in the coming of investors into the country. That is a sign that democracy has immense benefits in governance. Thus, all stakeholders in the entrenchment of democracy in this country must not relent in their efforts to work assiduously to safeguard it.

At least for now it is Ghana’s pride that in-terms of democratic governance she towers over some West African countries, if not the African continent as a whole.

Let us all come on board to safe-guard Ghana’s weaning democracy.
