Eulogy to Prof. Marian Ewurama Addy (nee Cole): From Union of Old St Monicans

Professor Marian Ewurama Addy, born Marian Ewurama Cole, entered St Monica’s Secondary School, Mampong-Ashanti, in January 1956 through to June 1960.  Marian could easily be spotted among her classmates because of her height.  She demonstrated unparalleled academic brilliance in both science and arts subjects.

She scored the highest marks and also maintained the topmost position throughout her secondary school years. It was, therefore, not surprising when she obtained distinction in all subjects at the ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level examinations and continued to Holy Child Secondary School, Cape Coast.

Sister Marian had an exceptional ‘IQ’ , she effectively combined academics and sporting activities without a hitch.  She represented the school at inter-collegiate sports in  the late fifties.  She was proud of the school that helped to shape her life as a ‘’St Monican”.   She, together with her sisters, Jane and Elizabeth (All St Monicans), instituted an Award for the “Best Girl” at St Monica’s Secondary School.

Time and space would not allow us to enumerate all her achievements.  We are proud of Prof. Ewurama Addy for being the first female Professor in Biochemistry and  for hosting the programme “Brillant Science and Maths Quiz” for second-cycle schools. She performed this task with excellence for many years and it was no wonder she became  the first President of the Anglican University.

Her autobiography, “Rewards”, has been an inspiration for both the young and old.  She was never self-centred.  She shared her academic insights, spiritual knowledge and above all, material things generously.  Prof. Ewurama Addy was God-fearing; her life has changed but has not been taken away. Though we shall neither see nor hear from her again, in our hearts and minds, we will remember and cherish her.

We rejoice that God gave Sister Marian to us and, therefore, we will not weep.  She faithfully discharged her earthly duties and is now sleeping on and resting from her labours.

Prof. Marian Ewurama Addy, you have fought a good fight, and may your Creator give you the rest and crown you deserve.  Prof., you have indeed lived up to the words of our School Ode:

“Let us bravely fight the battle

Whatso’er our work may be,

Let us pass to those who follow

Life’s bright torch of Liberty”.

“Each for all and all for God”

Sister Marian, Prof. Ewurama, Fare thee well till we meet again on the resurrection day.
