Fishermen were advised to:

• Turn off engine and dock the boat before refuelling Refueling should always be done in a clear area. Persons not involved in the refuelling should stay away from the area

• The one refuelling should keep the nozzle in contact with the edge of the fill to prevent build up of static electricity to avert sparking

 Motorists:

• Motorist should not fill their tanks to the brim, since fuel in the tank expands as the temperature rises, it should be filled to 90 per cent of the tank capacity

• Clean up fuel spills immediately with an only absorbent pad and wipe down the bilge or any interior parts that may have contact with fuel

One “Galloners”

•Always refill your portable fuel containers on the pavement or dock to ensure good ground. While the bed of the truck or the deck of the boat may seem stable, static electricity can build up and cause a spark

•Ensure the nozzle stays in contact with the tank opening. On the dock, put the absorbent pad under the container

Outboard motor

•Fuelling the boat with a portable container can take time, therefore ensure the container is comfortable to carry, hold and balance

•Portable containers, jerricans are spill prone, go slowly, pour deliberately and watch the container for signs of wear, consider funnel if possible

LPG users

•LPG users should do regular checks on their cylinders and hoses

•Do not turn on gas before striking a match
