Make us proud, Medeama

Make us proud, Medeama

Medeama Sporting Club have their destiny in their own hands as they play host to Congolese giants, TP Mazembe, in a decisive CAF Confederation Cup Group A assignment at the Sekondi Stadium at Essipon on Sunday.

So crucial is Sunday’s encounter for Medeama that not even a draw will be good enough, considering their ambition to make it to the semi-finals of the competition in their second attempt.

Two years ago, the Ghanaians took the Confederation Cup by storm, only to miss an opportunity to participate in the money zone by a whisker after losing on penalties to AS Leopards of Congo.

However, mother luck has smiled on them this time round, as they are in serious contention for a place in the last four stage after amassing five points in four games.

Incidentally, Medeama’s next game is against the same side which masterminded their only defeat in the group matches. TP Mazembe defeated Medeama 3-1 in their group opener in Lubumbashi and it is the turn of Medeama to pay their opponents back in their own coin at Essipon, come Sunday.

Beyond revenge, it’s a make-or-break cliffhanger for Medeama who are tied on five points in second place with MO Bejaia and, therefore, need a vital home win to edge closer to their semi-final dream.

On the other hand, TP Mazembe, who lead the Group A table with 10 points, have already sealed their qualification and will be playing for pride on Sunday.

That is the window of opportunity we expect Medeama to capitalise on, with the backing of deafening home support to claim the badly needed three points ahead of the final round games on August 23.

We believe that a good home win over the Congolese could motivate the Ghanaians to go for broke in their decider against MO Bejaia away in two weeks’ time to determine who joins TP Mazembe to the semi-finals.

And as if destined to qualify, Medeama will have the privilege of knowing the outcome of the Young Africans-MO Bejaia duel in Dar es Salaam tomorrow before facing TP Mazembe 24 hours later.

We think the decision by the Medeama coach, Prince Owusu, to take their destiny into their own hands is the best approach for the match.

“As I said the last time, our destiny to qualify to the semi-finals is in our hands, and as we did against Young Africans, we need to be flawless against Mazembe because they are a very good side. The team is still preparing for the game on Sunday and I believe that we will get a good result,” he summed up his team’s chances.

Considering their quality and how they fared against TP Mazembe in the first leg, we are confident that Medeama can live up to expectation when it matters most to make themselves and the nation proud on Sunday.

We wish them the best of luck.
