Lack of effective management killing talents

The lack of effective talent management institutions in the country has often been cited as one of the reasons for the lack of growth of the entertainment industry in Ghana.

Popular radio and television personality, Benny Blanco, real name Benny Ashun Jnr, has joined the conversation, saying that with the calibre of artiste representation in the country currently, there is very little chance of our artistes breaking through to the global stage.

In a chat with Showbiz after being outdoored as the Country Director of Africa 1 Media, a professional services firm which provides business and legal counsel for practitioners in the entertainment, media, artistic and sports arenas, Benny Blanco said  management is about strategy, planning and hard work but there are a lot of unqualified persons parading themselves as managers.

“Too many artistes in the country are content to rely on friends and personal assistants as their managers to the detriment of their careers,” he stated.

According to him, he joined Africa 1 Media after resigning from TV3’s New Day slot, because he together with the founder of the firm, Ms Cynthia Quarcoo, recognised that the creative arts business was sorely lacking proper representation.

Benny observed that some artiste managers in the country refuse to be honest with their clients and go on to fill their heads with false promises.

“It’s a case of cutting your coat according to your size. If you are an artiste in Ghana and you are making moderate gains here, let’s capitalise on that to see how best we can make that work for you. It is better than blurbing about unrealistic goals and promising  what you cannot deliver,” he said.

He pointed out that the systems and lack of fundamental structures in the creative arts industry in Ghana is one of the reasons why only a few artistes make it while many fade away after a brief spell in the limelight.

“Artistes here are fighting an uphill battle due to lack of fundamental structures in the industry. We are in a country where artistes do not get royalties.

“For the musicians, there’s no way to monitor when and where their music is played and certain governing bodies are also not living up to expectation.  However, there is still hope that things will change for the industry to thrive,” he stated.
