Roverman returns with Sankofa

Playwright Uncle Ebo Whyte and his Roverman Productions fulfilled their promise of treating Ghanaians to amazing and thought-provoking plays each quarter when they premiered their latest production, Sankofa, at the National Theatre on Wednesday.

Sankofa tells the story of a pair of confrontational and argumentative professors of the University of Africa, Prof Hardy and Prof Danso, who believe their academic qualification and intelligence give them the right to ride roughshod over everyone, including members of their own families.

Their sharp tongues and no-nonsense approach to life has caused a lot of damage to the lives of students unfortunate enough to be in their class and to the extent of affecting even their own children and spouses.

However. during their stay at the Oriental Hotel in Australia to present an award, they are taught a series of valuable lessons which cause them to soberly reflect on how their actions have affected the lives of others.

Typical of Roverman production plays, curtains rose at precisely 6:30pm and the entire play ran without a hitch. Although there were a few times where the actors seemed to mix-up their lines, they still managed to recover in time.

Uncle Ebo Whyte has made it a point to merge entertainment with social commentary and this was obvious in Sankofa.

Some themes explored in the play included the ills of the educational system and the dangers of parents pressuring their children to conform to their expectations.
