Nzulezu gets toilet facility

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has commissioned a toilet facility known as Biofil Toilet System for the Nzulezu Community in the Western Region. The 10-unit facility which is the first of its kind in the world would allow the community which is built on stilts in water to use the toilet without contaminating the lagoon which is a source of livelihood for the people of the community.

The Biofil Toilet System, technology uses a digester with an aerobic decomposition system, which treats toilet waste and flush water in the chamber. It then breaks down the toilet waste completely with oxygen in a way that odour is not generated.

Explaining how the system works, a Co-Production Manager of the project, Mr Caleb Kwaku Ansah said, the chamber itself is a filter, when you flush your water closet, the digester filters the liquid through sand and porous concrete, allowing non-toxic water to drain out to your garden, leaving the toilet waste in a suspended environment where oxygen gets to every part of it.

“Under those conditions, millions of environmentally friendly microorganisms and bacteria feed on the the toilet waste till it disappear completely”.

The project which has been in the offing since 2013 was sponsored by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation through its STEP programme and the government of Ghana with additional support from the Minister of Petroleum, Mr. Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah.

At the commissioning, which brought together members of the community, including traditional leaders, public officials among others, the DCE for Jomoro District Assembly, Mr. George Somiah in his speech said the construction of the facility was a manifestation of government's mission to collaborate with partners to bring development to the people.

He said the facility has come at an opportune time as sanitation remains one of government' top priorities and more especially in the area which has become a tourism hot spot.

Mr Somiah expressed gratitude to the government, UNWTO and the STEP Foundation for the project and urged the community to adopt a high maintenance culture in ensuring that it's properly cared for.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare on her part said the project is in line with government's policy of developing tourist’s destinations across the country and was hopeful the toilets will tackle the longstanding problem of indiscriminate defecation and also address the complaints of tourists about the nonexistence of toilet facilities at the village.

She said her outfit was committed to making the village very habitable for the over 400 inhabitants while increasing its fortunes as one of the most visited tourists destinations in the country.

Mrs Ofosu Adjare added that plans were far advanced to construct separate walkways for tourists and visitors to curb the situation where tourists run into inhabitants in their homes and rooms.
