My mask is my identity- Anumaa

Many artistes find ways of building an image for themselves when they join the music business and one such artiste who hopes to grab attention to himself is Dancehall artiste, Anumaa.

For many years, the Canada based artiste has hidden his identity behind a mask and the “trick” as he calls it will distinguish him in a competitive field like Dancehall.

“Samini, Shatta Wale and Yogi Doggy are all Dancehall artistes with deep voices that have been associated with Dancehall music but I stand out because of the mask I wear. Everyone now wants to know who is behind the mask and I’m enjoying the attention,” he told Showbiz in an interview last week.

Wearing of mask is an image that Afro-rock band, Dark Suburb has carved for itself but Anumaa dispelled assertions that he is copying the latter’s style.

“I know that members of Dark Suburb also wear mask but I started this mask-wearing trend before they did. They were just fortunate to taste fame before me when they got nominated in the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) last year,” he said.

Born in England but currently living in Canada, Anumaa who has worked with artistes such as Fresh Prince of 4X4, Stay Jay and Yaa Pono said he is in Ghana at the moment to promote his songs.

“No matter how good you are, you cannot make it Ghana when you live outside. There was no way Shatta Wale could have been the biggest artiste in Ghana if he lived outside.

“ The likes of Yogi Doggy are doing great music outside but they have not been able to breakthrough because they don’t live in Ghana. I want my people to accept me so I had to come down to promote my songs,” he explained.

Known for songs such as Love, Beautiful, Fakye and Shakara, Anumaa is hoping to work with some of the finest artistes in Ghana. He is currently promoting his latest song, Makoma.
