The film, which screened at this year’s World Narrative Category festival, is a story about Micah, an American volunteer who teaches in a Ghanaian village and had high expectations of his mother’s homeland.

He is eager to help his students reach their full potential, especially the intelligent 13-year-old Tuigi played by Ophelia Klenam Dzidzornu.

But Tuigi’s academic dream will be truncated when she is traded as a sex slave to pay for the medical bills of her father who was involved in an accident.

Outraged and upset about the traditions, Micah battles the culture, religious customs, and the state itself in order to save Tuigi from a cruel fate.

Like Cotton Twines is slated to premiere on RLJE’s subscription video on demand service, Urban Movie Channel (UMC) in December 2016.

In 2010, Leila’s debut feature, I Sing of a Well had two nominations at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). The film won three awards: Best Sound, Best Costume and the Jury Special Award for Over-All Best Film.

In 2011, Djansi was presented with the BAFTA/LA Pan African Film Festival Choice Award for I Sing of a Well.

In the same year, her movie, Sinking Sands received 10 African Movie Academy Award nominations with Ama K Abebrese winning the Best Actress Award and Djansi earning the Best Original Screenplay Award.

Djansi's work and contribution to the Ghana film industry has been recognised by UNiFEM Ghana, The African Women Development Fund and the Musician’s Union of Ghana(MUSIGA).
