Ghanaian arts scene Chale Wote festival reaches climax
The streets of James Town in Accra are expected to be filled with lovers of contemporary Ghanaian arts as this year’s Chale Wote Street Art Festival climaxes today, August 20, and tomorrow, August 21.

Chale Wote is a Ga expression meaning “Buddy let’s go.” The festival, organised by Accra Dot Alt, embraces street painting, graffiti, photography, interactive art installations, poetry, walking tours, dance, film shows, fashion parades, live music performances, workshops and more.
More than 200 Ghana-based and international artists are part of this year’s event which took off on Monday, August 15.
The theme for the 2016 festival is ‘Spirit Robot.’ Last year’s event was marked on the theme, ‘African Electronics’ and it witnessed the largest turnout since the festival started in 2011.

The festival brochure explained ‘Spirit Robot’ as “a constellation of art, energy, and passion that signifies our united capacity to create meaningful change in our communities and shift our realities into a more livable world for all.”
One of the innovative components of the festival this year has been the Open Gallery idea which has roped in six galleries in Accra to show divergent elements of modern Ghanaian art.
The exhibitions are at Kempiski Hotel, Nubuke Foundation at East Legon, Museum of Science and Technology, Mmofra Foundation at Dzorwulu, Brazil House at James Town and the Untamed Empire at North Ridge.
The Chale Wote Street Art Festival has definitely become a major fixture on the Ghanaian arts scene and the organisers hope it will keep growing in the coming years.
