‘Live in Accra’ jazz festival opens

The 2017 edition of the ‘Live in Accra Jazz Festival’ opened yesterday, April 19 with an exhibition of jazz-themed paintings by Yaw Safori at the Alliance Française in Accra.

Safori, an internationally-acclaimed, self-taught artsist,   has a deep love for jazz which reflects in his paintings of soloists, trios, quartets and big bands as well as stylistic renditions of various instruments.

On Saturday, April 22, South African trumpeter Marcus Wyatt, alongside the Victor Dey Quartet will thrill jazz fans with some stimulating compositions. Ivorian songstress, Ruth Tafabe will open the show with Afro Jazz pieces.

Ghanaian / Belgian star flutist Esinam Dogbatse, will on Wednesday, 26 delight fans with her improvisational skills.  Dogbatse, who has performed at several major shows across Europe and Africa, is set to showcase fresh compositions.

A seminar dubbed ‘Music Impact Conference’ will take place on Wednesday, April 26 and Thursday, April 27. Speakers include Okyeame Kwame and  Wiyaala (muscians); Sionne Neely (Co Director, Accra Dot Alt); Nomndeni Mdakhi (Founder Edits Talks) and Claude Grunitzky (Chairman & Co-Founder, True Africa) among others.

‘Coz of Moni’, a musical featuring Wanlov and Mensa, will be screened on Friday, April 28 in partnership with the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA). 

A concert dubbed ‘Heart to Heart’, which is in collaboration with The Israeli Embassy in Accra, Kwabena Kwabena and Save A Life Foundation, will take place on Saturday, April 29. 

Artists on the bill include saxophonist Guy Dvir (Israel), Dela Botri, Kwabena Kwabena, Adoma, Hewale Sounds and Abajo Group.

A concert to round off the festival and also to mark International Jazz Day will be held on Sunday, April 30 at the +233 Jazz Bar and Grill in Accra.
