Its relevance in today’s competitive music circles cannot be underestimated. However, music director, Skyface believes that despite boosting an artiste’s brand, Ghanaian artistes invest less in their music video.

“Our Nigerian brothers are far ahead of us when it comes to video productions. They appreciate its impact and would spend fortunes to get a quality video.

However, that is the opposite here with us. Yes, some of our artistes are doing their best but on the whole, I think Ghana is really lacking behind when it comes to music videos,” these were the words of Skyface when he spoke with Showbiz on Tuesday.

For one who has worked with the likes of Iwan, Bisa Kdei, D Cryme among others, the C.E.O of Apstairs Visuals said it is about time artistes capitalised on the successes of videos of some popular songs such as Wrecking Ball, Blurred Lines among others to “benefit from increased exposure and additional forms of revenue”.

Citing South Korea’s Psy to buttress his argument, Skyface said the latter’s Gandam Style song became popular not for its lyrics but the dance in the video which obviously won the hearts of many across the world.

“Dance moves such as Gandam style, Harlem Shake, Shoki, Alkaida and Azonto became popular through music videos and that is the power its wields,” he stated.

It’s not common for Ghanaian artistes to shoot their videos outside the country and Skyface believes the trend isn’t one that needs to be encouraged. He said artistes must be ready to pay more to get the best quality production they pay for when they shoot their videos outside,” he stated.

A graduate of Takoradi Polytechnic, Skyface, real name, Isaac Mensah has been shooting music videos for the past six years.

In 2013, he earned a nomination in the 4Syte Music Video Awards for Iwan’s Kiss.

Apart from Iwan, Skyface shot D.Cryme’s Koko Sakora and Alarm, Ebony’s Kupe, Soorebia’s Primus and Bisa Kdei’s Samina and Jwe.
