Celebs to ‘protect’ Atewa forest

A number of Ghanaian artistes and showbiz personalities including Bice Osei Kuffour aka Obour, MzVee, Nero X, Sherifa Gunu among others have been unveiled as project ambassadors for the Atewa Till Eternity project, which is aimed at protecting the Atewa Forest Reserve from destruction.

The initiative is supported by a number of non-governmental organisations such as Green Beats, Family Tree Entertainment among others.

Speaking at the unveiling, the lead project ambassador, Obour said the Atewa Forest Reserve, which is located in the Eastern Region, is situated in a beautiful mountainous area and endowed with vast biodiversity and mineral resource.

“The Atewa forest is the source of the Densu River which feeds the Weija Dam and provides at least 2 million people in Accra with potable water,” he said.

Obour said the continuous mining and destruction of the forest posed a threat to all Ghanaians and called on the President and the Forestry Commission of Ghana to secure the Atewa Forest by upgrading it into a National Park.

To further their advocacy initiative, Obour and the rest of the project ambassadors will be composing a song to boost support for their project.

They will also be conducting tours of the forest reserve with the public to raise awareness of the issues facing the forest reserve.

The newly appointed CEO of the Ghana Tourism Development Company Ltd, Kwadwo Antwi, affirmed support of government and the President to preserving the natural resources of the country.

He said although the government was committed in its resolved, it still needed the support and partnership of private sector in achieving this goal.
