An Ewe expression which means a new dawn breaks or new era, the foundation’s name of Nubuke was chosen by the three founding members:  Mr Tutu Agyare, Mr Kofi Setordji and Ms Odile Tevie.

To date, Ms Tevie and Mr Setordji have been jointly driving the vision of the foundation as director and artistic director respectively.

Over 10 visual art exhibitions and projects, talks, readings, film screenings, drama and other showings are held annually at its premises. Visual art exhibitions have been held in collaboration with sister institutions in Ghana, West Africa, Europe and USA.

The foundation’s maiden project was a photographic publication curated to bring the mind of Ghanaians and others to the richness of our culture, heritage and art forms, flora and fauna.

Titled, ‘Ghana: A Portrait,’ the coffe-table book was calculated to hit the shelves just before Ghana celebrated its 50th independence anniversary celebrations.

It helped usher in a new era on the arts scene of this country, which prior to that time, had been dominated by foreign-supported institutions.

This year, the foundation’s journey moves on from Accra to the Upper West Region where it has been working over the past five years in Wa and its environs with textile weaving and clay communities.

The foundation’s Wa centre will become a hub for artists who wish to practise with the medium of clay and textiles and will be their point of interaction with artisanal skills which abound in the northern part of the country.

Furthermore, a digital archive for our rich textile weaving heritage will be created through collaborations with academics and other custodians of culture.

As part of the anniversary celebration, the foundation will on Saturday, October 22, welcome El Anatsui, the illustrious Ghanaian-born artist, to meet a Ghanaian audience for the first time.

“We are entering our next decade of challenges and excitement and we invite the general public to support us to continue our mission to preserve, record and promote the arts of Ghana,” Ms Tevie and Mr Setordji said about the anniversary celebration.
