The likes of Shirley and JOT should be acting in ways that would be exemplary, worthy of emulation and trend-setting, things that would fortify and uplift the industry. Shame on them!

Ghana Movie Awards and Shirley’s show of disrespect

With how the processes for the awards panned out, it would have been a shock, if the main event had gone without blemish.

As reported by journalists and stakeholders, the 2016 edition could pass as one of the most tepid award shows organised in 2016.

Aside the technical mishaps, respected personalities acted silly, broke protocol, and did whatever they deemed fit at an event that lacked proper structure.

Shirley’s Unpardonable Faux Pas

It is evident that the movie industry is fragmented; there’s so much disunity, envy, jealously and back-biting – an impression that was made credible by the impasse between the likes of Nana Akua Addo, Bibi Bright, Selly Galley and Zynell Zull recently.

As host, and most probably sticking to script, DKB wanted to use the opportunity to make Nana Akua Addo and Zynell Zuh make up.  The two were called on stage as award presenters and the host wanted them to squash the ‘beef’ on stage – a move that was being highly appreciated by the audience until, revered film maker, Shirley Frimpong Manso, with help from another respected media personality/actor, JOT Agyemang, decided to thwart the move, much to the chagrin of the audience.

Without warning, the celebrated movie director walked on stage with JOT while DKB was in the midst of brokering peace between the two ladies, took control of the microphone and stated that; the gesture orchestrated by DKB was not necessary and that, the two female actors were adults and should sort out their peace deal somewhere else.

JOT then took Zynell away and a sheepish DKB and Nana Akua had to handle the rest of a thwarted plan on stage.

The ‘Life & Living It’ director should have known better. She is a leading lady in the movie industry and should have been the one leading the front in ensuring that peace prevails in the sector, and not to exacerbate it.

Maybe she was tired and frustrated over the deluge of wrongs that characterized the event and may have felt the peace plan was a waste of time. Even if that suggestion was true, she should have been tolerant and exhibited respect to the host and the directors/producers of the event.

Her action typifies an industry which has no discipline, no exhibition of reverence for each other and no show of veneration for the works of one another.

Instead of speaking some ‘sense’ into the head of Shirley, to dissuade her from that unpopular action she took, JOT Agyeman rather spurred her on and perpetuated an unprofessional and uncivilized act that could have marred the event had the host not acted professionally about the incident.

The likes of Shirley and JOT should be acting in ways that would be exemplary, worthy of emulation and trend-setting, things that would fortify and uplift the industry. Shame on them!

The Sorry State of the Awards

The organisation of the Ghana Movie Awards over the weekend put credence to the talk of how shoddy the scheme has been for the past years.

Happenings on the night made the scheme, the major stakeholders of the industry and patrons of the event –laughable.

In this time and age, if you put together a movie awards scheme and you cannot screen nominees tape, then you have no business organising birthday party for kindergarten kids. The ability to screen the tape of nominees in a category in a movie awards is basic; if you can’t pull that off, you are useless!

The beauty of any awards show is the presence of nominees and especially, eventual winners.  This edition of the awards was characterised by the very low turn-out of winners – a depiction how major players are losing interest in the scheme.

Red carpet moment has become a significant element in awards scheme, so, it is treated with the utmost seriousness, but not with that for the Ghana Movie Awards.

An over-crowded red carpet segment was poorly structured and coordinated, giving a foretaste of what was to come at the main awards – and they had it, fully served.

On the late start; that should not even be a topic worthy of discussion.

Just A Matter of Time

There’s little doubt that CEO of the Awards, Phred Nuamah enjoys some goodwill among players within the movie fraternity, but with his abysmal handling of the awards over the years, it is just a matter of time before he loses all form of support, from the players and corporate Ghana.

Signs of rejection were shown at this year’s awards as almost all the A-list actors failed to show up at the Nominees Party and again, most winners failed to show up at the main event.

Many folks in the media have resolved not to waste their energy and time writing and commenting on the awards, because of the ‘I Don’t Care’ attitude that is always put up by the CEO. It is just a matter of time!
