GAW empowers Ghana through reading

Budding poets from Jack and Jill School, Accra Girls Senior High School (SHS) and Tema Presbyterian SHS thrilled the audience with some wonderful poems, giving an indication that there are many who will take after the Atukwei Okais and the Ama Ata Aidoos when they leave the scene.

The Ghana Association of Writers Book Festival (GAWBOFEST), the sixth in the series, themed! “Empowering Ghana through Reading, came off successfully and organisers and patrons of the programme indicated that it was the best so far.

Ama Ata Aidoo, who had chaired about three of the previous events and last Wednesday’s event, mentioned that she loved the cosy atmosphere and the warm interactions among the writers, the publishers, book sellers and their guests. It was fun for the children who had their faces painted and holding pictured stories and paper-cuttings they had worked on with the resource persons.

The Ghana Library Authority and Library Association members were there to make sure that the public and, especially students, enjoyed some E-book reading at the venue.

In a speech that encouraged the youth of today to read because there were many books available to them now unlike those days when many children like her struggled to get books to read, the guest speaker, Dr Doris Dartey, encouraged the youth of today to read because reading opened doors to many opportunities.

Professor Atukwei Okai, the General Secretary of PAWA, said he was elated that the programme was held at the PAWA House and praised the organisers for choosing the Founder’s Day to hold the annual event.  The Chinese Ambassador, Sun Baohong, expressed her happiness at being part of the event and promised that the association with the GAWBOFEST was going to be the beginning of great things between Ghanaian and Chinese writers.
