Emancipation Day launched

 

The celebration is on the theme ‘Our Heritage, Our Strength’ and a sub-theme ‘Empowering Our Youth Through Pan-African Culture.’

Launching the event, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, said African people on the continent and in the Diaspora shared not only a common history but also a common destiny.

“In the spirit of Pan-Africanism, we are entreating the youth of African descent to come together and strengthen the bond of solidarity and remember that unity is vital to the economic, social and political progress of the people of African descent,” she said.

The 2016 Emancipation Day celebration starts with wreath-laying ceremonies on Thursday, July 28, at the Du Bois Memorial Centre, the George Padmore Research Library and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra. 

There will also be a variety of entertainment at Chapel Square,   Cape Coast preceded by a procession of Asafo companies and masqueraders from the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium to the Chapel Square on Friday, July 29.

On Saturday, July 30, Assin Praso, in the Central Region, will take centre stage with a durbar of chiefs and people to commemorate the event. 

The climax of the Emancipation Day will be on August 1, with a grand durbar of chiefs and people at Assin-Manso, which is also part of the slave corridor and is home to Nnoko Nsuo, also known as the Slave River, where the slaves had their bath before they were shipped overseas.
