Edem, others for Afenorto festival

The concert forms part of a variety of activities marking the annual festival celebrated by the Chiefs and people of Mepe, in the Volta Region which started on Saturday, July 30. 

On Saturday, July 30, the Mepe Development Association held a cultural music fanfair featuring various drumming troupes to usher in the festival.

The drumming troupes representing clans such as Sevie, Dzagbak, Gbanvie, Adzigo, Akorvie among others thrilled patrons who had come in their numbers to the Presbyterian Park, Mepe to witness the event to interesting performances.

In their beautiful African clothes, the groups made up of men, women and children came one after the other to display different dance moves associated with their clans.

Some of the dance according to them signifies peace, love and togetherness. Drums that had been abandoned for over two decades were beaten bringing back memories of how the people of Mepe loved to dance to different tunes by the drum beaters.

Later on in the day, the clans which had symbols like fowl, crocodile with a hunter standing  on it, iineapple, lion, and padlock demonstrated what their symbols stand for.

The symbol of the crocodile with a hunter standing on it belongs to Adzigo clan and it signifies a brave hunter called Dela  Nalah who discovered Adzigo land. 

The Akorvie clan uses the symbol of the fowl and it represents supremacy.

 Throwing more light on the Afenorto festival,  Mr. Shabanton Dutsrogbe, the Public Relation Officer for the Mepe Development Association told Showbiz that “The Afenorto festival which means “Period of Rest at Home” is celebrated annually by the Chiefs and people of Mepe to renew the sense of oneness of the people.

 “The festival provides a unique opportunity for reunions, particularly bonding with the extended family and ancestors.

According to him, said a lot of activities have been line-up for the Afenorto festival which will be climaxed with a grand durbar of the chiefs and people of the area on Saturday, August 13.

“ From now till the end of the festval, patrons will have the opportunity to be a part of events such as a beach party, beauty contest, fun games among others.
