The colourfully-attired Asafo companies chanted, played their drums and gongs and danced to the delight of all during the procession.
At Chapel Square, artistes such as Nana Boroo, Koo Ntakra and some Cape Coast based- rappers performed to delight the townsfolk.
Earlier in Accra, there were wreath-laying ceremonies at the Du-Bois Centre, the George Padmore Research Library and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park as part of the celebration which was on the theme: ‘Emancipation, Our Heritage, Our Strength: Empowering African Youth through Pan-African Culture.’
Events were also held at Assin Praso and Assin Manso, both in the Central Region to remember the atrocities of the slave trade and appreciate those who worked hard towards its abolition.
The Emancipation Day celebration is a commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade in the British Crown Colonies in 1834 and United States in 1865.
The celebration originated in the Caribbean but it has now spread widely across the African Diaspora.
Ghana started celebrating Emancipation Day in 1998.
