Since assuming office in June 2013, the workers said Ms Bawa had “chalked up numerous achievements” that had inured to the benefit of the industry, its players and the employees.

In a statement signed by the Chairman of the House Committee of the NIC staff, Mr Maxwell Adu, and copied to the Graphic Business, the staff mentioned the commission’s ‘No Premium, No Cover’ policy, the introduction of Claims Payment Guidelines and the aggressive expansion and penetration of micro insurance as some of the initiatives.

False allegations

The statement was in response to recent media reports that some staff members of the commission had petitioned President Nana Akufo-Addo to dismiss the insurance commissioner.

“The staff wish to use this medium to state emphatically and unambiguously that there is no iota of truth in the aforementioned publications,” the statement said in reference to the press reports that the staff were against the commissioner.

“At no time have the staff of the NIC petitioned the President or chased out the Commissioner of Insurance,” it added.

Contrary to the reports, the statement said the staff are “not only enjoying a fruitful and cordial relationship with the Commissioner of Insurance but continue to experience improved service conditions under her tenure.”

Further achievements

Throwing more light on the achievements of the Commissioner, the statement said the claims payment guidelines had ensured prompt and speedy payment of claims thereby protecting the interest of insurers and third party claimants.

It also mentioned the enforcement of the compulsory fire insurance policy and the payment of realistic compensation to road traffic accident victims as some of the successes chalked up by Ms Bawa.

It concluded by urging the general public to disregard publications that seek to malign the integrity of the Commissioner and the NIC since they do not represent the views “nor emanate from the staff of the NIC.”
