Luncheon for investors at Kundum Festival

Mothers Heritage Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that works to develop rural communities, in collaboration with the Sanzule royal palace, under the patronage of the Omanhene, Akatakyie Asafo Boakye III, is hosting a line-up of business investors from Asia, Europe and Africa at an investment luncheon during this year's Kundum Festival in the Western Region.

During the festival, which will take place on Saturday, October 28, the businessmen will spend one day in the small fishing community of Sanzule in the Nzema East District to witness the spectacle of pageantry display by the chief and people of the area as they celebrate their annual festival.

In a bid to show the world the industrial and tourism potential of the area, the hosting of what is to become an annual fund- raising luncheon will also create a short getaway and an amazing networking opportunity for the business community.

Dubbed "One Day in Sanzule", this year's luncheon will take place at the Maaha Beach Resort, a first-class hospitality facility serving a discerning clientele.

Funds raised will be used for the improvement of the Sanzule community in areas such as water, sanitation and public showers.

Already, the luncheon has generated great interest and at the moment a number of investors have confirmed attending alongside various visitors from other regions of Ghana and neighbouring countries.

Many of them are companies in the petroleum and tourism industry since they will benefit the most by establishing their business in the area which is rich in oil.

Sanzule has a great many opportunities for the citing of factories that produce energy and tourism products and Omanhene Akatakyie Boakye III and his sub-chiefs are galvanising and sensitising their people to position themselves well for employment.

Culture as a tool for development sums up the theme for this year's festival and “nananom” intend to change the narrative and use what is indigenous to them to progress their community.

About the event

The Kundum Festival is celebrated by the coastal tribes of the Western Region, with the main highlights being the cleansing of their stool, offering ancestral prayers and the spectacular carnival procession that characterises Ghanaian festivals.

The legend of the Kundum itself comes from a tree in a village called Aboade, whose fruits ripen only once a year.

Thus, the people adopted the ripening of the fruit to start the celebration. Another legend has it that a hunter on his usual expedition sawdwarfs dancing to the pattern of a strange rhythm, studied the dance for months, mastered it and came home to teach his people, which breaks out into an annual festival.

Its celebration varies from town to town. Everyone of them makes an effort to add some uniqueness to their own celebration to make it grand. Kundum is one of the few festivals in Ghana that has evolved with modern trends.

Generally, Akan festivals are a time for arbitration and the Kundum is no exception. It is a time to instil sound moral values into the townfolk. Each day of the week has a unique celebration, which sees indigenes and their chiefs congregate, hold court to resolve outstanding conflicts, plan new developmental projects and welcome back home natives returning for the annual pilgrimage.

This makes any festival time a great opportune time for companies that wish to conquer new markets to promote their businesses. It is on the back of this that the Sanzule palace is riding, having organised themselves most effectively to attract the necessary audience.
