Donewell insurance opens doors to university students

Donewell Insurance Company is opening its doors to university students who wish to build their capacities by offering them internship opportunities.

The Managing Director of the company, Mrs Stella Segbawu, who spoke to the Daily Graphic after a two-day training programme for the first batch of interns, said the company was not limiting the internship opportunity to only students in the insurance industry but to all university students.

She said the company had 15 offices across the country and there was, therefore, no limitation. She added that “once you have entrepreneurial spirit, we will give you the platform”.

“We won’t limit it to just our industry because what we want to do is grow entrepreneurs to make some income for themselves, so we are training them to become sales representatives where they will go out with the knowledge they have acquired, sell our policies and begin to make income for themselves right from school,” she stated.

“They can then grow their skills to now set up agencies, and if they are aggressive, they can go on to become brokers and even set up their own insurance companies in future,” she added.

She said the company was currently training 55 students across the country.

These students are from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Cape Coast, University of Ghana, Valley View University, University of Education and the University for Development Studies (UDS).

Insurance education

Mrs Segbawu also advocated the need for more public education on insurance.

“The public is even confused with the difference between insurance and microfinance. They think once we are all collecting money,  we are in the same market,” she pointed out.

She said the public needed to understand that life was about risks and it was time each individual cushioned his or her life in order to relieve people of some of the pains and mishaps when a life was lost.

The Donewell Insurance MD also reiterated the need to put in some regulation to make life insurance mandatory for people.

Public confidence

Mrs Segbawu said the National Insurance Commission was now doing lots of education, which is beginning to increase the public confidence in the industry.

“The industry is also now highly regulated so the negative public perception about insurance is going down. However, the market penetration is about two per cent, which is very low so we need to work harder,” she stressed.

About Donewell

She said Donewell was doing very well on the market and had the public trust because it was affiliated to the Methodist Church.

She stated that the company currently had 10 life insurance products with specific features that made them unique from others.
