Malik Yakubu wins 2016 Milo Marathon

Twenty-five-old Malik Yakubu,  from the Ashanti Region, was yesterday crowned winner of the 29th edition of the Accra Milo Marathon.

For his prize, Yakubu, who finished the over 42- kilometre race in a time of 2:22:46 seconds, took home Gh¢15,000 as cash prize, a certificate, medal and other consolation prizes from the sponsors.

Kassim Mohammed and Joseph Yandal, who placed second and third received GH¢5,000 and GH¢3,000  cash prizes respectively together with certificates, medals as well as souvenirs. 

In the female division, 19-year-old Elizabeth Azure from Navrongo Senior High School beat competition from Lariba Sakat and Elizabeth Bortsor     (who were first and second runners-up respectively), to grab the glittering trophy at stake together with GH¢15,000,  a certificate, a medal and souvenirs from the sponsors.

While Lariba Sakat took home GH¢5,000 and a certificate as reward, third placed Elizabeth Bortso got GH¢3,000 and a certificate.  

In an interview with the Daily Graphic,  Azure, who lost the Peugeot car prize to Lariba Sakat at the Millenium Marathon a fortnight ago at the Independence Square, said she intensified her training after her defeat  to beat  Sakat, who always gave her a stiff challenge. 

“I am so happy that I beat Lariba today because she always beat me. This morning we started the race together but when we were about to finish I increased my speed and left her behind,” she stressed.

A total of 9,000 athletes competed the race for adults and the five- kilometre fun race for children.

Partners for this year’s edition included Hollard, Voltic,  Duraplast Limited and GTV+.
